RESEARCH ON SARAH PARKER

Ali suggested us to do some research on Sarah Parker' sun spell commercial. It was suggested that we could use the same approach for our brief, by using some significant colours or mono-coloured set to present colourful foods to attract people's attention in eating more colours.

Sarah Parker

“I am... a set designer and maker based in East London."
“I like... colour, intrigue, pattern, deadlines, paper, curiosities, clever concepts and a challenge.”

Sunspell commercial
  • one colour—> different tones n shades (tones created by shadows) --> depth
  • as only one colour was used for each photograph, the shades and shadows are what caught people’s attention.
- Sarah used only one coloured tone for each set. Yellow was used for the living room set, red for the door set and blue for the office desk set. By only using one colour in her set designs, the textures and shadows were being focused when the set was being presented.
- The shadows did not only add depth onto the set, but also created more different tones of the mono-coloured set.
- Sarah also tried to make the set less dull and less boring by adding some fabric texture onto the walls. The silky fabric added depth to the whole design when presented to make it richer in texture.

Colours

only one colour is used in every set. The colours help create an atmospheric effect and give people an emotional stimulation. Blue creates a cold and depressed feeling, orange creates anger and tension, while mustard creates a calming atmosphere.

Light sources n shadows

yellow
A light s shined from the left to create a nice and clean shadow from the furniture especially the lamp. The outlines of the shadows were so sharp and clean that only the shadows themselves could form another art piece. Also, the shadows helped to create a separation between the furniture/ objects from the walls. Since all the sets were only created with one colour, it is unavoidable that the objects would blend in to the walls and create a flat image. Therefore, the shadows not only added depth to the design, they also helped to enhance the outcome by separating the foreground and background.

orange

Unlike the other two sets, the light source was being shined from inside the door. This added an atmospheric effect onto the set.  Sarah did not only create a rich textured set, but also a mysterious atmosphere.

blue

The main light source comes from right perpendicularly at the top of the desk and from the left. Therefore. not only the shadows are significant in the set, the reflected light is significant as well. With the obvious bright and dark areas of the objects, a bigger contrast was being created comparatively to the other two sets.
