WHO AM I?

Your presentation needs to reflect your personal style, showcasing you as an individual designer.

AS A LEARNER
I think I am definitely a visual learner. I love looking at people's work and their final outcome. I like looking at different styles and try mixing them together to create my own. However, I realised that sometimes, only looking at the final outcome might hinder my creativity. The aesthetic is undoubtedly important when it comes to a good design, however, the most important element would be the concept behind. Therefore, apart from only looking at final outcomes, I have to learning looking at the artists statements and descriptions of the designs that I like.

AS A DESIGNER
As a designer, I wouldn't say that I have a really significant style right now, but I definitely want mine to be bold and leaning more on the artsy aesthetic instead of a really commercialised style.

UNI LIFE
My first year in uni was actually a really eye opening experience for me. It was my first year studying abroad and I used to always have a thought of "I am finally studying in an art school". It is a really big step for me stepping out of my comfort zone and I never regretted it.

Stuff that I learnt in uni was exciting and I was really interested in learning more about graphic design during classes. I started to learn a lot of software skills which I would say I have none before studying here. I gained a lot of knowledge about graphic design last year and they were really useful to my later work.

Due to my personality of getting stressed really easily. During my first year, I found out that the best way to make myself less stressed is time management. Time management has been the most useful skill for my work. I used to plan everything out in my diary few weeks before deadlines and make a list to complete every day. It went really well and I used to finish everything few days before deadlines.

I also learnt that networking and communicating is also a big part of being a designer, and to be honest, it has been one of my biggest concern. Due to my anxious personality, I tend to be really scared of talking to foreigners. I feel like studying abroad has hindered my skills in communication and socialising. I used to be very energetic and talkative when I was back in Hong Kong. My extroverted personality used to make me think that leadership is something that I enjoy doing. I like to be the talking person in the group and lighting up the atmosphere.
However, after the first year coming to the UK, I feel like my extroverted personality has been deteriorating. I am becoming a person that I have never thought that I would become. A really shy and introverted side of me came out and I think it is really bad for me in terms of my mental health and personal growth.

Second year, to be honest, is a lot tougher. A lot more freedom is given and it is a very good opportunity for us to discover and know more about ourselves and start looking for our future directions. I finally started to force myself to adapt to the people and environment here. I went out a lot and met a lot of different people in the beginning of the school year. However, that was not a good idea and I feel like it has increased my feelings of anxiety. Compared to last year, my time management skill is really bad. I am becoming less organised and tend to wait for the last minute to finish up my work. It is like a vicious cycle. Being scared talking to people, being scared going to class and crits, learning less, and being less motivated. Anyways, I am trying really hard to get myself together and get everything back on track.

For next year, Level 6, digitally, I would like to further enrich myself in software skills especially for after effects and Adobe xd. Physically, my aim is to develop a significant style in my work and try applying that in the 10 briefs.  I would like to try drawing more stuff as I want my style to include more textures.

AIMS
After everything that I have learnt and experienced over the past two years, I feel like I am not suitable in continuing my future career here in the UK. Therefore, there is a high possibility that I am going back to Hong Kong after graduation. I have been wanting to create something that can help people in Hong Kong, especially in the creative industry.

In the future, I would like to do something related to fashion and styling. Maybe setting up a creative label that can draw young creatives in Hong Kong together to form a community of creatives from different fields. Jerry, the artist that I am researching on in the creative report brief has been doing exactly what I wanted, creating a community full of artists and designers. I hope that I can expand my social circle into theirs and start doing things that I have been wanting to do with them.

As for the summer holiday, by the time I would be back in Hong Kong and I am thinking of applying for cinematography courses. I have been really interested in film studies and I would like to learn more about it.

Apart from that, I would like apply for internships. The best would be working for a fashion label. It has been one of my ultimate goal after graduation, working as a graphic designer or an art director in a fashion related company. Therefore, from now on, I will look for different internships in Hong Kong over the summer and apply for as many as I can.

EXHIBITION VISITS

LET'S DO LUNCH EXHIBITION (30DEC)

I love going to different exhibitions and art markets with friends when I am in Hong Kong. This time, one of my friends' tutor held an exhibition in Hong Kong. I went there with my friends and it was a quite fun experience. It is an exhibition about the food culture in Hong Kong, about how hectic it is in the central district area of Hong Kong during lunch time and how different types of people have lunch in their own different ways. There were pamphlets introducing fast food culture, yum cha, reunion dinner, etc. I think the idea of giving out pamphlets in the exhibition is a really good idea for foreign visitors to really dig deep into the theme and know more about it. As seen the the photo, there are both Chinese and English in the pamphlets which is really user friendly even for foreigners.

The exhibition occupied a really big space with 2 floors. It is highly interactive and I would say it is suitable for people of all ages to visit. There is a space where there are 3 tables and surrounded by chairs for people to sit on. On the tables, there are drawing papers for kids to draw and colour on. This is a really good way to bring audiences together and come up with some creativity. On the other hand, the artist can also look at the drawings that visitors drew and take inspirations from them.

The artist that held the exhibition is a graphic design graduate from UAL. As seen, her style is strongly illustration based. Compared to my work, I might not be that illustrative. Therefore, holding this kind of big exhibition might not be that appropriate for my future career. However, I can see that it would be really fun and satisfying if it is held with my few close friends who are studying art as well. I would love to create something big like the exhibition with them. I would not say it is my ultimate goal of holding a big exhibition, but it is definitely something that I would love try doing in the future.

HONG KONG ART BOOK FAIR (17JAN)

Apart from LETS DO LUNCH, I also went to the Hong Kong Art book fair. It is actually quite similar to the one that I went before in Manchester (BOUND BK FAIR). It was so crowded and I can barely approach each table to get to see different artists' work. However, it was such a nice experience as I have talked to a few artists and designers about their work, and how they made their books. A lot of them used risoprinting to make their book and it is really interesting that the same method of proaction can produce these many types of aesthetics and styles.

The only difference from the Bound Book Fair is that there is a small section of the exhibition spaces occupied by publications that is about the No China Protest. This is also my main purpose of going to the fair. I looked at many small zines and publications about the protest and they were really informative and relatable. Some of them focuses on the spreading of information and one focuses on the aesthetic and art side of the publication.

[LIFE'S A PITCH] GROUP EVALUATION

For the design boards, my role is to finish the evaluation page. I typed up a group evaluation and talked about our challenges in communication.

EVALUATION
To be honest, every one seems to have their own issue in our group which makes it really difficult to communicate with each other in person. Therefore, we created a snapchat chatroom for easier communication. Although, texting definitely helped us a lot as we discussed many of our visual ideas through snapchat and give each other feedback, communication is still a really big problem in our group.

Snapchat has become our main way to communicate with all groupmates, however, not all of us would be online every time. This created a problem of inconsistency in our work. Because of the challenges in communication, we all seem to have done work on our own work separately and it has created another challenge which is to make our designs consistent.

As we all know that communication would be the biggest challenge for our group, we need a leading role. Raisa did a really good job guiding us just step by step to the final outcome. Although we have already decided our design roles, Raisa is the one who takes the initiate to start doing everything. This actually helps our group a lot as all of us seem to be a bit lost and Raisa would always be the one who could suggest concrete ideas and have us start making something on track.

All in all, under the circumstances in our group, we put through it together and the final outcome was fine. Before the day of pitching, everyone seems to have finally realised the urgency of getting everything done. We all worked out together and wrap the whole presentation up by putting all our work together into the slides.

FINAL WEBSITE

I took a video when the BGM was working. I then uploaded the bracket file onto GitHub as well as the images that I uses in the website. I actually really like the aesthetic of the final outcome. At least I will not feel bad if I send it to Jerry as I am really satisfied with it. The only thing that I think is missing is the interactive part of the website. Due to my limited skills in coding, making the website highly interactive is really challenging for me.

[LIFE'S A PTICH] EVALUATION

To be very honest, as I have not been feeling really well, I did not come in as much and missed lots of classes. This creates a barrier in communication with groupmates. In order to to improve our communication, we opened a snapchat group. Raisa and Tia have been really nice and trying really hard to included everyone in the project, although I knew they are not feeling well too. I appreciate them a lot as it is a really difficult task to lead all of the group mates and get everyone to do work.

This is actually my first time have this feeling of anxiety and I did not know how to handle it. I know it should not be an excuse of not participating in the group project, but I have been trying to keep my emotions stable in order to catch up with class. Also, Responsive have been stressing me out a lot and I felt dejected after the module submission. That is why I have been trying to avoid work after the submission.

However, as the presentation deadline is approaching, I felt even more stressed. Therefore, I finally got motivated and be engaged in to the grape discussions. I communicated with group mates through texting and it worked. Mostly, I talked to Raisa about my ideas as I did not feel comfortable in talking in the group. It had improved and I tried to send work that I have done to the group and they seem to agree with my ideas.

I feel like I have been dragging the group down without fully participating in the discussions. However, I did try to pay full effort after feeling better and finally getting a bit on track. In the end, I think I did quite good in helping to wrap up everything and it turned out that the presentation was quite successful.
