CORE IDEA
- Spend some time in your teams to figure out the essence and core of your ideas
- Try to explain the idea in written form under 280 characters (Tweet length), so that you can easily pitch it to someone else who hasn't heard it before
- Keep it short and to the point whilst also making sure there is enough to communicate your idea clearly.
So, we decided to expand on one of our previous initial ideas based on an exhibition for feminist designs/ work done by female designers. We wanted to be more inclusive and really stand for what feminism is, equality.
As we were chatting about it the idea became a lot more solid. Raisa said that maybe instead of an exhibition, we could do a Podcast because it might be a more appropriate way to have a conversation about the problems people face every single day. As well as this innovation, Rosie has had inductions and experience with sound labs and the equipment used for recording people talking so, with this knowlegde we will not be going into it blind.
We then talked about how the podcast could be a way of discussing topics that people are uncomfortable talking about, things left unsaid etc. Topics such as mental health, people talk about it but, not so much about the general annoyances you deal with on a daily basis. Whether it is an ignorant comment made or people not being educated enough about it. Culture is another topic, a few members of our group are not originally from the UK, they experience a huge culture shock and have to face xenophobia every day, not always intentionally, sometimes it comes back to people not being educated enough to realise what they are saying/ doing is actually wrong.
These are just examples of the topics that the podcast will be covering, but we want to engage with Leeds and get the public to voice their problems and issues they have rather than just issues that are related to us. We want the podcast to start these conversations inside offices, classrooms, studios and even peoples homes so, that we can actually engage with other people. A lot of these issues are repressed, there is stigma and people are scared to say how something really makes them feel. The podcast is about making a change, giving people the freedom of saying "You know what, I didn't like what you just said".
RESPONSE TO TASK
So, for today's task, we wrote this:
"Exposure: A Podcast that will cover topics that people are uncomfortable to talk about. Exposing the reality of these issues, how we should be more open and losing the stigma around taboo conversations. Also, how we as designers, deal with such topics."
After, reading our "tweet" to another group, they said this statement explains our idea well and it sounds like it would be an interesting subject to explore. They asked us what sort of tone the Podcast will have and we had not yet discussed this however, it seemed obvious to us what the answer would be. The conversations will be light-hearted but to the point. We can not scare our audience away, merely educate them. They agreed that that would be an appropriate approach.
Their idea was to host a fortnightly critique for designers across Leeds, held in the studio. We suggested that they could make posters to advertise the event, using scrap paper so it is more sustainable. Then during the event getting the attendees to all collaborate to make the posters for the following week. So, it isn't just a critique but, also a place to make artwork together.
GROUP DISCUSSION
After, our group spoke about our idea and what deliverables we will be making. This will also allow us to delegate the workload evenly across the group. The podcast will be the main deliverable and with that we will need advertising. We decided that the best way to do this will be through a social media account and posters.
We need to remember to make this about design and not just the "taboo" conversations. We don't want to lose the main element of the brief.
